Progressing Backwards, 2020

Progressing Backwards is a performance and essay in collaboration with the MODA Critical Review at Columbia University. In my essay, I draw connections between high rise tech headquarters and aerial surveillance of Iraq during British colonial rule.
Navigating using Instagram Live footage from an iPhone strapped to my back, I walked one mile in San Francisco’s SoMa tech district backwards to bring attention to the immoral absurdity in prioritizing capital while displacing lower income communities as an effect of tech gentrification. This was done while dressed in tech worker attire.
