Protein Filament, 2018
artists’ hair, plexiglass, wire stands, and acrylic
10” x 8” x 8”

Asking to touch people of color’s hair is not appropriate. In Protein Filament, the routinely sought-after hair of the artists (read: specimens) is displayed in a case to request the same institutionalized respect given to artifacts. The work aims to refuse the ownership that the colonizer assumes over the colonized subjects and to reallocate identity and power to the subjects themselves.

This is a collaborative work with Kamal Jahi exhibited at the San Francisco Art Institute.
